Colour
Leonberger come in a
range of colours. They range from a light yellow through to a reddish
brown with a black face mask. Some have white markings on their chests.
Whatever the animal's colour, the hair between the front legs, under the
tail and throat is usually lighter in colour than the remainder of the
coat.
Grooming
Leonberger only
require brushing once a week.
History
The Leonberger has an
unusual history. It was specifically developed in the 1840s so that it
looked like the lion on the crest of the town of Leonberger. It is actually a
cross between a Newfoundland and Saint Bernard, with additional
contribution from the Pyrenean Mountain Dog.
Positives
Leonbergers are
gentle giants. They interact well with adults and children alike, and are
very placid and easy going.
Negatives
Leonberger are large
dogs, and require a substantial amount of food. They also need room to
move, so are not suited to small yards.
